Dizzee Rascal

UK Christian artist criticises Dizzee's Obama comments (11.11.08)

UK Christian rapper Wizdom from Greenjade says Dizzee Rascal’s appearance on Newsnight "made us (black people) look bad”.

Online forums have been going wild since Dizzee Rascal  appeared on BBC TV’s Newsnight last week. The British, award-winning hip-hop artist was invited on to the popular current affairs show alongside Baroness Amos (the UK’s former International Development Secretary) to talk about Barak Obama becoming the first African-American president.

Dizzee’s laid back attitude and comments on the subject sparked outrage with many black viewers who have said the rapper was  "inarticulate" and very "annoying".

"Dizzee appearance on the show has put us (black people) back a bit," says Wizdom. "It makes us all look bad and gives the impression that all young people in the UK are not articulate enough or able to communicate in an inclusive (white and black) forum."

Wizdom adds: “I don’t think it’s Dizzee’s fault though. I’ve been on Newsnight before and I know they vet people and what they say before they go on. They wanted the contrast of an intelligent, black woman (Baroness Amos) and a road man (Dizzee Rascal) – and got just that."

Newsnight is a BBC current affairs TV programme noted for its in-depth analysis and tough cross-examination of senior politicians. Jeremy Paxman is the show’s main presenter.
