Tye Tribbett standing out in London

He's fresh, funky and has bags of energy...

We're talking about US Gospel artist, Tye Tribbett who flew into the UK to perform at a special concert marking Bishop John Francis' 25th year in ministry. Maya Simeon checked out the event and caught up with him backstage.

Event review: Celebration Concert’ featuring Tye Tribbett @ Westminster’s Central Hall, London (June 2008)

To celebrate 25 years of Bishop John Francis being in ministry, a spectrum of events during June were organised, including this concert. The elegant Westminster Central Hall was the location where hundreds of people, young and old, gathered on this warm midsummer’s evening for an event of great Gospel music.

Tye TribbettOpening up the evening’s proceedings was a special presentation by Bishop’s two teenage daughters, Juanita and Teleisa Francis, who performed a powerful warfare dance routine, much to the delight of their father and the crowd. Muyiwa and Riversongz delivered their distinct brand of Pop/Rock praise saturated with African rhythm and showcased tracks from the recent album, Declaring His Love, plus all the favourites while insisting on audience participation. Muyiwa then flipped the script and utilised his radio presenting skills to host the remainder of the show, introducing Byron Cage who brought his flavour of traditional American Gospel, ministering much-loved classics such as ‘I Will Bless the Lord’ and ‘The Presence of The Lord’. The prince of praise took the party to the next level with his passionate songs and fancy footwork.

This set the scene for headliners Tye Tribbet and Greater Anointing to seal the deal. Welcomed by an intensely excited crowd (some of whom had dressed up in school uniforms and donned other Tye-inspired outfits in tribute), this phenomenal collective wasted no time and begun with the defiant I Want It All Back, before proceeding to deliver their fervent catalogue of empowering warfare praise and adoring worship, including many from his groundbreaking latest album. As expected, Tye and the gang’s eccentric energy was off the wall (literally!) causing a commotion; the crowd having no choice but to get involved in the contagious action, most being more than happy to oblige! Everyone was shucking out, especially Bishop Francis!

To describe the performance as electrifying is an understatement, yet by no means was it devoid of depth. Ever the truth-teller, Tye commanded a significant pause, communicating the serious message of the necessity for Christians to take a stand in a world full of compromise and live in righteousness. It was a completely exhilarating night in every way and a celebration it most definitely was.

I caught up with Tye after the show, chilling backstage with Bishop Francis….

M: Hey Tye, welcome to London and the UK!
T: Thank you, it’s really great to be here again!

M: First of all, congratulations on StandOUT! reaching number 1 in the Gospel Billboards charts!
T: Oh thank you, it’s a blessing and all honour goes to God. We’re privileged to be used of Him.

M: Do you have a favourite track on the album?
T: Yeah, number 13! It’s called ‘Chasing After You’. It’s got a kinda acoustic, unplugged sound, with just a couple of singers and a guitar. It reminds me to stay hungry for the Lord. You know, you can preach for so long, you can sing or play for so long and have been in church your whole life and think you’ve got a handle on God, but I don’t ever wanna get comfortable or stagnant or be presumptuous to think I know all of who God is or how He’s gonna move. I always wanna be chasing Him, asking what’s next. The Bible talks about daily bread, so something should be happening - a newness, a freshness – every day of my life!

M: I found it interesting that during the concert, you spoke to the crowd about the fact that Stand OUT! is the spirit of a movement, tell me more…
T: I believe God is calling for a stand. We’ve experienced the flood of the enemy in all areas of life, but Scripture says that the Lord shall raise up a standard against those things. It’s obvious to recognise the movement of the enemy and now God is gonna respond, but it’s time we stand up. I believe God is calling for this, a standard, and that’s simply a new system of normal, what’s regular. We need to live in a time where it should be normal to pray and worship in society and I wanna be one of the examples of that movement.

Tye Tribbett - Stand Out
M: How would you advise young people to stand out?
T: I think one of the main things is that youth try so hard to get affirmation from their surroundings. They try to be down and be accepted. My message is don't be down, be right! (laughs) It's in style to jump people, film it and put it up on you tube; being malicious and perverted. God is looking for that and it's cool to be right.
M: I have to ask; your look is very unique, how did you come up with that?
T: (Laughs) I don’t know! Well I kinda like dressing like a nerd, a geek. This school uniform thing is symbolic of the fact we’re all learning, and I just love bow ties! I don’t know what we’re doing now, we’ve moved on to black, white and red. God has given me a platform and an anointing to influence this generation, but we had no idea our outfits would have such an effect!

M: You’re very much an encourager, someone who inspires other people, but when you yourself are going through what do you do?
T: I cry in my wife’s arms! She’s my personal pastor, prophet, encourager… I also play the keys or surround myself with songs of The Lord, I go down in my basement to the studio and blast some worship music. I musically restore myself. I also get into the Word of God of course!

M: What’s your favourite all-time Scripture?
T: Psalms 34:1 “I will bless the Lord at all times and His praises shall continually be in my mouth.”

M: So did you always want to be in music?
T: Yes, always! My dream was to play for Hezekiah Walker! I wanted to be a musician extraordinaire! (Giggles)

M: What’s in your iPod?
T: Ah, I listen to everybody. All kingdom music that is!

M: Do you have a favourite artist right now?
T: Michael Gungor. He’s got some wonderful songs and I listen to them every day!

M: It’s been great having you come to the UK again. Has God given you a specific word for us?
T: Not specifically but I just know the territorial powers that are here are way different from the States. It’s a little more loose, like anything goes here, so the prayers gotta be a little bit stronger spiritually! I pray the people of God just stand fast and stand firm… please!
